Innovative load-bearing structure behind a historic façade

On the site of the former Deutsche Bahn repair workshop in Munich-Freimann, Motorworld Munich has been created as an extraordinary place for mobility and culture enthusiasts. The challenge: the listed façade of the historic locomotive shed had to be completely preserved. The new building was therefore carefully integrated into the existing hall structure - using DELTABEAM® Composite Beams and ATLANT® Composite Columns from Peikko.

An experience space for mobility and culture

Motorworld Munich offers more than just automotive fascination. The imposing locomotive hall with a height of 18 metres and a roof area of around 20,000 m² is a versatile venue. In addition to changing exhibitions, Motorworld offers numerous conference rooms, various catering outlets, shops and overnight accommodation in a four-star AMERON Group hotel. The variety of vehicles is also impressive: over 25 of the most exclusive vehicle brands - including McLaren, Bugatti and Porsche - are represented at Motorworld. Over 120 glass display boxes allow the vehicles to be presented in style. Admission to Motorworld is free of charge all year round. Around 800 parking spaces are available on the grounds and in the underground car park.

DELTABEAM® Frames between engines and luxury brands

The DELTABEAM® Frames system from Peikko, consisting of DELTABEAM® Composite Beams, ATLANT® Composite Columns and additional steel connections, was used for the internal load-bearing structure behind the historic façade. The structure was seamlessly integrated into the industrial style of the locomotive hall from the ground floor to the third floor and at the same time used as an architectural design element.

The beam-free DELTABEAM® Composite Beams enable large spans and flexible space utilisation. At the same time, they offer ideal conditions for the simple and elegant integration of technical building installations, for example in the meeting rooms. The slim ATLANT® Composite Columns with high load-bearing capacity reduce the number of columns required and ensure maximum openness.

The result is a functional, architecturally coherent and economically efficient supporting structure.

The ease of assembly within the existing building and the possibility of concreting the columns from below using a filler opening on site contributed significantly to the decision to use the system. However, the decisive advantage that persuaded the client to switch to DELTABEAM® Frames was the possibility of constructing the steel structure without fire protection coating or panelling. The otherwise very complex detail connections of classic fire protection coatings could all be dispensed with.

Motorworld Munich shows how modern structural solutions can be combined with historically valuable architecture. With the DELTABEAM® Frame System, Peikko not only provides load-bearing structures, but also creates space for inspiration, functionality and design.
